North Carolina has a system that's just hard-down stupid. There's the decree of absolute divorce, and then there's the resolution of all the other issues of divorce. Another big problem in North Carolina is that child support varies depending on how many nights the child spends with each parent. This gives parents a financial incentive to argue over their parenting plan. Yuk.
