His name is Kowaliga
(for the Indian chief and the state park in Alabama). For the benefit of
those not skilled in the ways of LA (that's Lower Alabama), Kowaliga is
pronounced "kuh LIGE uh."Kowaliga is 100 pounds
of muscle and energy, and nearly always happy. Even at age 8, he's still more puppy than dog. He
eats houses. He has survived a collision with a hit-and-run driver, and
appears to be none the worse for wear. Thanks to the unintentional intervention
of my son Joe, Kowaliga is now less an outdoor dog
than a house dog, happily farting his way through life. He says the blessing
each day before he eats (you think I'm kidding, don't you?).
Kowaliga was for years the ultimate low-maintenance dog.
Unfortunately, he has developed lately an inordinate fear of
thunderstorms (or more precisely, any hint of rain). This has provided
fresh challenges for his masters. We're workin' on it.
