I think you are most likely right about her motivation for calling.

However... I also want to point out that it's very difficult to talk to young children on the phone.  If you son is 7 now, than he would have been a pre-schooler when you first got divorced.  Children that age don't usually communicate well on the phone and that could be a reason why she didn't call him back then.
