To say I feel stupid and embarassed being in this situation is an understatement, but I am lost and confused....

Two and half years ago, I married a young lady from a foreign country.  She has a son from a previous marriage.  They arrived here in February of 2007 (about 22 months ago) and moved into my house.  They brought no money, no assets.  I arranged for a small job for her that she earned a few thousands dollars and a babysitting job for another thousand during the summer.  But all the money she earned, she kept for herself.  I never asked her to contribute to the family expenses, ever.  The relationship has been strained almost the entire time.  I understand the difficulties of moving from a foreign country and leaving behind friends and family.  That, and other issues have contributed to the demise of the marriage.  When I talked to her about the failure of the marriage, I discovered she wasn't so broke up about that as she was not getting her green card.  She even asked me to help her find another husband.  Gee, for some reason, I have this strong feeling that the marriage wasn't really about me, but more about getting a green card to America.  So, now that I have disclosed all of that....my questions....

I live in Alabama.  I own (well, the bank really owns it, but my name is on the mortgage) the house that we live in and no other property.  I know she can't touch my currently eviserated 401k due to the short length of the marriage.  I am still carrying $14K debt from the wedding, the hineymoon, two flights over for me, the expenses of the visa for her and son, a vacation and gifts for her family, and their flight to the USA.  Given all of that, what, if any amount will I be expected to pay for child support of the stepson and alimony to her?  I am trying to get this settled amicably (hopefully using Lee) and I would like to know what my expectations should be.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

unless you have legally adopted the steson you shouldn't have to pay any child support for him.

have you contacted an attorney yet?

I have not legally adopted him.  I didn't think I would have to pay any child support, but I wasn't certain.

I have not contacted an attorney yet.  I was hoping to get "rough" answers to the basic questions and then discuss our "options" with my wife.  I would prefer to do this all through Lee Borden (the Alabama onoine divorce attorney).  I didn't want to contact him being totally in the dark either.

I also didn't want to plan to not pay her anything, but I wanted to know what i might be obligated to pay her.  Especially since the marriage was so short (22 months living as husband and wife...legally at 29 months).

LostNConfused has double posted, which has raised the opportunity for inconsistent information. All of this is thoroughly explored on the Alabama board at http://divorceinfo.com/heo/index.php/topic,14743.0.html, so go there if you want to find out about it. Let's not post any more on this topic here, please.
