To say I feel stupid and embarassed being in this situation is an understatement, but I am lost and confused....
Two and half years ago, I married a young lady from a foreign country. She has a son from a previous marriage. They arrived here in February of 2007 (about 22 months ago) and moved into my house. They brought no money, no assets. I arranged for a small job for her that she earned a few thousands dollars and a babysitting job for another thousand during the summer. But all the money she earned, she kept for herself. I never asked her to contribute to the family expenses, ever. The relationship has been strained almost the entire time. I understand the difficulties of moving from a foreign country and leaving behind friends and family. That, and other issues have contributed to the demise of the marriage. When I talked to her about the failure of the marriage, I discovered she wasn't so broke up about that as she was not getting her green card. She even asked me to help her find another husband. Gee, for some reason, I have this strong feeling that the marriage wasn't really about me, but more about getting a green card to America. So, now that I have disclosed all of that....my questions....
I live in Alabama. I own (well, the bank really owns it, but my name is on the mortgage) the house that we live in and no other property. I know she can't touch my currently eviserated 401k due to the short length of the marriage. I am still carrying $14K debt from the wedding, the hineymoon, two flights over for me, the expenses of the visa for her and son, a vacation and gifts for her family, and their flight to the USA. Given all of that, what, if any amount will I be expected to pay for child support of the stepson and alimony to her? I am trying to get this settled amicably (hopefully using Lee) and I would like to know what my expectations should be.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
