My former husband - who now lives in another state - has been writing me for years his exact retirement date because he'll then stop paying the alimony and I am to receive half his pension.  He recently wrote me that he has moved this date up over a year and the amount of the month pension has suddenly been reduced.  I do not know his present employer of have a QDRI, so have only have his dubious word for all this.  I just found a posting he put on a forum where he states he's retiring at the original date.  How do I protect myself from his unjust enrichment at my expense?

well first gather all the paperwork information to back up your position that you can. Then see an attorney.

The divorce degree states that he is to pay alimony until my death or remarriage and that upon his retirement that I am to receive half of his pension from the company he worked for while we were married.  I'm not contesting his unilateral decision to stop the alimony on retirement, just need to verify that he's actually doing this and the monthly pension amount.  He lives in another state and I have to do this pro se.

I don't know the facts of your case, but I do know that it's routine for a pension to be actuarially adjusted (downward) when a worker retires early. The compensation for you and the worker (your Ex) is that you both begin receiving the money sooner. I don't know anything about your Ex's pension, but the actuarial adjustments most pensions make don't change the value of the stream, just its shape.
