I'm in CA. I realize the judge can order the alimony to last a certain amount of time, but what if I remarry? Can the alimony continue, especially if I am still using it as part of the support money needed for my kids with the ex. I also realize that this is what child support is for, but it's not enough on its own. I also cannot work due to permanent disability. I have just started receiving SSI, but even with SSi, spousal and child support things are tough. If I remarry, my spouse to be also has support to pay and limited income...so I need every penny I can get to pay the bills.
My divorce is not final yet. I'm hoping the judgement will get signed in June.

In nearly every state I know, alimony stops when the recipient remarries. Don't hold me to this, but I believe your law in CA says it stops unless you and your husband have agreed otherwise in the settlement agreement.

You're not going to like hearing this, but you are likely facing a choice between (a) denying yourself a life with the man who could be the real man of your dreams or (b) denying yourself and your children some of the financial benefits of your former marriage. I won't presume to tell you which choice is better for you, but I will tell you that I don't know of any way for you to have it both ways.

I'm no expert, but I would think if you remarried you're NOT entitled to any alimony as you are someone elses respondibility. Why should he have to pay for another mans wife if you're divorced? It isn't right as far as I see it.

Also, being on SSI, you're required to report ALL income by law. You might want to ask a lawyer about it.
